Allendale Walking Club starts March 3rd!

Come join us for a walk! Allendale Community League is piloting a walking club, and you’re invited!

How it works:

We will meet at the hall (6330 105A st) at 2pm on Sunday, March 3rd, 17th, and 31st. Then we will set out on a round-trip walk for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. We’ll return to the hall at the end of the walk.

-Participation is free!

-You don’t need to attend every walk.

-Everyone can walk at their own preferred pace.

-Dogs (well-behaved) are welcome! If you bring your dog, you are responsible for their behaviour and for cleaning up after them.

-Please ensure kids have a guardian present.

-No bathroom will be available, as we won’t have access to the hall.

-If you meet a new walking buddy, feel free to branch off and meet on your own time.

After March, walking group leaders will assess whether or not to continue meeting regularly and what changes to implement, if any.

Our community soccer program is completely run by parent volunteers,
so I invite all families to pitch in and help make the upcoming
whirlwind season amazing! We can only have teams if we have coaches,
so please reach out if you think you are interested in coaching. It is
very rewarding. There are countless other ways to help as well,

Community of Practice Meeting – Feb 10th

This is the second Community of Practice meeting in a community-led format, but if you missed the last meeting, new participants are still welcome!

The question we’ll be brainstorming is: “How can we use the info gathered from community members by Community Leagues to build stronger, vibrant neighbourhoods and connections among residents?”

In the first meeting, we began a conversation about “Using the data collected from Community League memberships and through Abundant Community Edmonton”. We covered a lot of ground understanding various ways and degrees to which diverse leagues collect information from residents. Let’s carry on the conversation to explore how we can take the step from collecting information, to using it for the benefit of our communities and residents.

What do you want to see in your community?

When: Saturday, February 10th

Arrival: 9:30 a.m. Meeting: 10 a.m. to 12 noon

Ice rink cancelled this year

Due to unusually high temperatures this year, we are reluctantly forced to cancel the ice rink. Our hearts are hanging low. 💔

Q: “Why?! Winter just started!”

A: For us to make ice for the rink, temperatures consistently need to be below -10°C. It takes about 2 weeks of these low temperatures and many, many volunteer hours (at night!) to make the ice.

Temperatures aren’t predicted to get to the right temperature until mid-January (at the earliest). That, coupled with the 2-week ice-making time, brings us to early February until the earliest grand opening. When skate season closes in March, the huge expense of flooding the rink, and the time of our dedicated volunteers, are not well-spent.

Q: “Other rinks around the city are open. How is this possible?”

A: The way our rink is positioned, if it’s sunny and only a little below zero, the sun can turn whatever ice there is into slush. Once it re-freezes, the ice will be rough and not fun for skating.

Q: “Are we going to have anything else in the rink?”

A: There has been some discussion about clearing the tennis courts of snow and having a broomball event and/or a winter get-together with hot drinks, but nothing has been confirmed. If you are interested in getting involved in one or both of these events (or have an idea for another type of community event), please contact us at info@allendalecommunity.ca
